Scholarships 1966-1978.

The records consist of individual files for scholarship recipients, arranged alphabetically. The files contain applications, correspondence, notations from the minutes of the Scholarship Committee (see TALC 16/2/3/2), and financial records. The correspondence is primarily that of the area secretaries of the Division for World Mission and Inter-Church Cooperation (DWMIC) of The American Lutheran Church: Lowell L. Hesterman, James L. Knutson, Duane A. Olson, M. Douglas Swendseid, and John C. Westby. Their correspondence is with DWMIC Treasurer Philip A. Jacobson, the scholarship recipients, church officials of the sponsoring countries, and school officials of the institutions that accepted the scholarship students. Scholarship recipients are from Australia, Brazil, Cameroon (Cameroun), Central African Republic (Central African Empire), Colombia, Ethiopia, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Madagascar, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea (New Guinea), South Africa, Taiwan, and Tanzania. With one exception, all studied in the USA. There are sometimes questions about which part of a student's name is actually the surname, especially in the case of students from Ethiopia and Madagascar. To be consistent, the files were maintained under the name and in the order in which they were filed when received in the archives. Countries were recorded as listed by the recipients, including the two spellings of Cameroon and the country name changes of New Guinea and Central African Republic.
